Zanzibar

A fabulously exotic beach holiday destination just off the Eastern coast of Africa, Zanzibar floats in an idyll of azure Indian Ocean and is fringed by palm trees and white sand beaches

Making up the ‘zan’ in Tanzania, Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands, formed by extinct volcanoes and dominated by Zanzibar and Pemba Islands. While the island chain remains a part of Tanzania, the islands are a semi-autonomous state and thanks to this and their offshore location, have their own characteristic, culture and flair

Zanzibar boasts some stunning hotels and resorts, all of which offer outstanding value, with friendly and attentive staff and a sense of open space in which to appreciate the charms of this beautiful region

There’s also plenty to explore. Stone Town is the capital, which is made up of narrow, winding, Arabian-style alleys, atmospheric open-air markets and intricately-carved stone doorways. Ruled for hundreds of years by the Sultan of Oman, the uniqueness of this old city has made it a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are also lots of small fishing villages dotted long the coastlines, which offer an insight into the traditional way of life here

More natural wonders consist of the pristine coral reefs encircling the islands, which can be explored by snorkelling, scuba diving, or by glass-bottom boat. The quality and accessibility of these amazing habitats rate amongst the very best examples of coral reefs in the world. In the south of the island, the Jozani National Park welcomes visitors to discover the tropical rainforest and mangrove forest. Curious Red Colobus monkeys are everywhere in this part of Zanzibar and offer a friendly welcome

Tanzania is primarily a Muslim country and admiring the colourful headscarves, listening to the haunting call to prayer, and visiting beautiful mosques is all part of the pleasure of visiting these islands. If you are here for the end of Ramadan, you’ll get to experience the joy of the locals coming out to celebrate Eid al-Fitr – when everyone feasts in the streets to mark the end of fasting

Zanzibar Island is also known as ‘The Spice Island’. Zanzibar is famed for their huge variety of spices, fruits and vegetables, which together with its location between the African and Indian continents make for a delicious cuisine that can’t be found elsewhere.

A holiday in Zanzibar can also be combined with a safari in mainland Tanzania for an action-packed holiday
